アリー 3シーズン16話「真心のすべてを」 Boy Next Door

シーン1　◆ケイジ＆フィッシュ事務所。アリーのオフィス（朝）
アリー	脳・・・腫瘍？
	A brain ... tumor?
ビリー	そう。
	Yeah.
アリー	頭に？
	In your head?
ビリー	ちがう。おしりにだ、アリー。おしりに脳腫瘍ができちゃったんだ。
	No, it's in my ass, Ally. I have a brain tumor in my ass.
アリー	それで・・・それで手術とかするの？
	Are they ... are they going to take it out?
ビリー	もう少し検査するみたいだ。どうするかはそれから。もう、あー、みんな知ってるみたいだけど、君には直接話したかったんだ。だってほら、これできたの、君のせいっぽいから。
	I'm going in for more tests, and then, they'll tell me what, uh ... Listen, um, everybody seems to know, but, uh, I wanted to tell you personally, since, uh ... you know, you probably helped bring it on.
アリー	・・・。
ビリー	冗談。

アリー	あなた死んじゃうの、ビリー？
	Are you going to die, Billy?

エレイン	ねえ、ビリーが脳腫瘍って聞いた？
	Did you hear Billy has a brain tumor?
アリー	聞いてます。ネタにするのはやめて。
	Yes, Elain. Try not to enjoy it.
エレイン	ネタになんかしてない！　ただ・・・
	I'm not enjoying it. What I ----
アリー	いいから、シーッ！
	Shh!

	＜かめっより＞　エレインのセリフ、"Did you hear Billy has a brain tumor?" は、「時制の一致」していませんね！　もし、一致させて、"Did you hear Billy had a brain tumor?" とすると、「ビリーが脳腫瘍って聞いたけど（ホントはどうかしら）」というニュアンスになります。つまり、エレインはその情報をウ飲みにしているわけではない。逆に、has の場合、べつに疑ってない。（参考：よねくにさんの「英語上達への提言」サイト内、掲示板の発言No.21「英語における時制の一致について」）江川泰一郎著「英文法解説」（金子書房）によると、現在形と過去形のどちらにするかは、話者（エレイン）がどこに重点を置いているかによるそうです。つまり、エレインがこの文を発話した時に視点を置いていれば "Did you hear Billy has a brain tumor?" になるのが自然（現在でも脳腫瘍を持っているから）。それに対し、heard の時点に視点を置いていれば（聞いた時にはそうだった）、過去形に合わせるのが自然だとのことです。（Shin-ichiroさん、ありがとう！）。

シーン3　◆会議室
リチャード	アリー。よかった。あー、クッキ－見た人いない？
	Ally. Great. Uh, any-anybody seen the Biscuit?
ネル	じき来るでしょ。
	Well, he should be here.
リチャード	いいよ、始めよう。まず最初は、あー、ビリーの脳腫瘍の件。ビリー本人と話したら、大げさにしないでほしいって言うんだ。だから、陰気くさくなるのはよそう。百害あって一利なし。いまビリーが必要としてるのは、ごくさりげない支え。とにかく、ビリーは・・・ああ、なんて言い方だろう。なんかビリーがもう死んだみたい。前向きに。彼はここ。どうなの、ビリー？　俺たちにこいつをどう扱ってほしい？　もろ、そのまんま？　サラッと無視？　心の病気？　俺の友達でいたんだ、脳腫瘍だと思ったら自分だけの思い込みだったってのが。前向きに。
	Well, let's get started. First up, uh, Billy's brain tumor. I, I've spoken to Billy, and what he'd really like is to not make it a big deal. There's no reason to walk around morose -- it doesn't do anybody any good. What he needs most right now is just simple support. The thing about Billy, uh ... Listen to me, talking about him like he's alaready dead, he ... Bygones. He's right here. Tell us, Billy, how would you like us to, to handle this? Like it's real? Like it's not real? Psychosomatic? It happened to a friend of mine once. Thought he had a, you know, brain tumor; turns out it was all in his head. Uh, bygones.
ビリー	リチャード。
	Richard?
リチャード	あう。
	Yeah.
ビリー	落ちつけって。
	Calm down.
リチャード	あぁ。
	Yeah.
ビリー	分かんないんだから、詳しい検査してみたら、思ってたよりも・・・ずっと・・・。ちょっと失礼。
	Could be nothing. I'm going in for more tests. When I know ... more ... Excuse me.
リン	好き放題やられちゃたまんない。
	I hope he's not going to milk this.
リチャード	な。む、あ～・・・じゃあ、次。あー、プルーン対プルーン。
	What ... yeah. Uh... uh, next up. Uh, Prune vs. Prune.
アリー	う、あ～、婚姻無効の手続きを今日から。
	Um, um, uh, annulment proceeding. We start today.
リチャード	もしかして、主任はビリー？
	Isn't Billy first-chair on that?
アリー	そう。
	Yes.
リチャード	それ避けたほうがよくないかなあ。その、腫瘍がらみで。
	Well, do you think that's wise, Ally, w-with the tumor thing?
アリー	それは・・・それは、ちょっと話してみる。
	I ... I'll, I'll talk to him.
エレイン	ン、ウン！　クッキーが困ったことになっちゃって。

ジョン	いいや、大丈夫じゃないよ！　エレベーターにはさまってるんだ。
	No, I'm not all right! I'm stuck in an elevator!
エレイン	消防車呼んだから。じき来るはず。
	I called the fire department. They're on their way.
リチャード	す、すぐ出してやるよ、ジョン。
	We, we're going to get you out, John!
リン	階段で昇り降りしろってこと？
	Does this mean I have to take the stairs?
リチャード	あ～、な、ジョ、ジョン、助けがいま来るからラクにしてろって。
	Uh ... Joh-John, John, help is on the way. Just, just try to relax.
ジョン	ああ、ラクにね！　ワインでも持って来てくれる？
	Yes, I'll relax! Perhaps you can bring me a spritzer!
エレイン	見て、ちぐはぐな靴下。なんかかわい～い。

サンディ	まだ、なにかあります・・・やっておくこと？
	Anything else that can be done? -- I can do?
ビリー	ねえ、逃げたっていいんだよ、サンディ。君の相手に誰がふさわしいかは分からないけど、いい年したバツイチの脳腫瘍持ちってことはないだろう。
	Well, you could take a hike. Sandy, I don't know who your Mr. Right may be, but the odds of him being an older man coming off a divorce, with a brain tumor ...?
サンディ	私逃げたりしないわよ、いくら・・・
	I'm not going to run away just because ----
ビリー	こっちが願いさげってことだ。大したことないかもしれないけど、でも、もしもあした手術なんてことになって病院の廊下を運ばれていくとしたら・・・その時握りたいのは、君の手じゃなさそうだから。
	I'm pushing you away. Hey, I might come out of this fine, but ... look. If I suddenly go into surgery tomorrow and as they're pulling me down the hospital corridor ... I don't see your hand as the one I want to be holding.
サンディ	よく分かった。私のために無理してるんじゃないのね。
	I get it. You're not just trying to spare me pain?
ビリー	！
サンディ	ビリー？
	Billy?
ビリー	へ？　・・・　あ、あ、あ、ちがう。自分のことしか考えてない。
	What? ... Uh ... no. I'm only thinking of myself.
サンディ	そう。どうも。
	Yeah. ... Hi.
アリー	どうも。ちょっと、ビリー、い～や～、これってほら、大した手術じゃないし。あ・・・戦術。私にやらせてよ。だって・・・
	Hi. Listen. Billy, um ... this is a pretty simple procedure. Uh ... proceeding. You should let me do it, and I ----
ビリー	ダメだ。そういうことをするのは、やめてくれ。病人扱いされるのはまっぴらゴメンだ。変な気つかうな！
	No. Nobody's going to be doing that around here. Nobody's going to be treating me like a damn patient. You can forget that!
アリー	だって幻覚が見えるんでしょ？
	But you say you hallucinate.
ビリー	君もだろ？　アル・グルーンやいろんな妄想を見てるくせに！
	So do you. You see Al Green, you have your fantasies.
アリー	でも、現実との区別はつく。
	But I know when I'm having them.
ビリー	ああ、僕もだんだんつくようになってきた。
	Well, I'm beginning to figure that out, too.
アリー	ビリー・・・
	Billy ----
ビリー	なにかヘマやったら外してくれ。でも、仕事は一番の支えなんだ。ちゃんとできるから！
	Ally, if I screw up, take me off. But work is the best thing for me. I can do this!

ビリー	君信じられる？　こういうことって他人事で、まさか・・・。
	You believe this? I mean, you hear about it happening to other people, but ...

ビリー	昼休みに専門医に診てもらうんだ。でも、良性なのは間違いないって話。
	I'm meeting with a specialist at lunchtime. But they truly believe it to be benign.

プルーン氏	結婚するまで踏み込んだ関係はなかったんです。僕は婚前交渉に反対だし、アンジェラもそうでした。そういう点で僕らは通じ合っていた。
	We'd never been ... intimate, prior to our wedding night. I, I don't believe in premarital sex, and neither does Angela. That's one of the things we bonded over.
相手代理人	ほかに、どんな点で通じ合っていましたか？
	Well, tell us what else you bonded over, Mr. Prune.
プルーン氏	価値観です。もう一度くり返します。価値観。夫婦としての、親としての。よく話し合ったものです。流されたくないよねって、この物質本位で人工的で上辺だけの世の中に。なのに・・・
	Values. I'll, I'll say it again. Values. For ourselves, for o-our children. We, we'd talk about how hard it is to compete in this materialistic, artificial, superficial world, and well ----
相手代理人	教会で出会われた。でしょ？
	You met in church, right?
プルーン氏	あ、はい。2人とも熱心に通っていたので。
	Uh, yes. Yes, we're both avid churchgoers.
相手代理人	初夜についてお聞かせください。
	Tell us about your wedding night, Mr. Prune.
プルーン氏	それは、あ・・・とても素晴らしかった。シャンパンのボトルと、ベッドサイドにはキャンドル。彼女がバスルームからシースルーのガウンで出てきて、はらりと床に落とした。まさに女神です。ベッドにもぐり込んできた彼女に、僕はかぶさり・・・
	Well, um ... it was wonderful. We had a bottle of champagne, and there was a candle by the bed. She came out of the bathroom wearing a provocative sheer robe. She let it fall to the floor. She was a goddess. Then, she climbed into bed and I, I went to her ...

プルーン氏	胸に顔をうずめました。2年間ずっと抑えてきた欲望です、つきあいだしてからその日までずっと。なのに、顔をうずめるなり、すぐ分かったんです。
	I nuzzled into her breasts, which I'd been longing to do for over two years, the entire period of our courtship. And, as I pressed my head into them, that's when I discovered it.

	What, sir? Her tummy what?
プルーン氏	つまんでた。

相手代理人	しかし、プルーンさん、それを知ってからもあなたは夫婦を続けてらした。
	But, Mr. Prune, after this discovery, you did stay married to her?
プルーン氏	はい。精一杯努力してみました。でも、彼女は本来の自分を偽っていた。僕が結婚したのは偽りの彼女。
	Yes. I, well, I tried to make it work. But she pretended to be something she wasn't. I married the thing she wasn't!
相手代理人	なぜ離婚ではなく、無効にしたいんですか？
	Why not just get a divorce? Why an annulment?
プルーン氏	最初から偽りだったから。それに、離婚だと僕に負担がきますし。
	Because it was never real. Plus, a divorce, I'd have baggage.

シーン7　◆プルーン氏への反対尋問（ｂｙアリー）
アリー	彼女の体目当てで結婚したんですか？
	So, you married her for her physical traits?
プルーン氏	そう来ると思った。ちがいます！　でも、自分の体形を偽ろうって人間ですよ。本来の自分を作り変えるあやうさを持った人間。神に与えられた肉体に満足できないような人間。すべて、内面をものがたってます。
	I knew you'd say that -- no! But a, a person who lies about her physicality, a person who has such an insecurity that she'd try to alter herself, a person who's not content to live in the body God gave her -- th-that speaks to what she is inside.
アリー	見栄っぱりってだけ。相手の長所も短所も引き受けるのが結婚じゃないんですか？
	That speaks to vanity. So, you'll marry her for better or worse so long as she's not vain?
プルーン氏	見栄っぱりの範疇を超えてます。あの、あなたもいじってらっしゃるようなので、こんなこと言うのは・・・
	It's a little beyond vanity, counsel. And ... I can see you've had a little work done yourself, so I really don't ----
アリー	そんな、そんそんな、そんなことしてません！　私はいじったりしてない！　削除を求めます、裁判長。

アリー	あんなこと何で言うわけ！　そうでしょ、どっかいじったように見える？
	I cannot believe he said that! Now, do I look like I've had work done?
ビリー	アリー。
	Ally.
アリー	あっ！　たーく、冗談じゃないわ！
	Ogh! I am so sure!
専門医	おまたせ！　こちら、ピーターズ先生。私のご意見番、兼通訳ってとこねえ。
	Herro. This is Dr. Peters. I brought her in on consult, plus my English.
ビリー	よろしく。
	Hello.
ピーターズ	どうも。
	Hi.
専門医	ビリー、細胞密度から言って腫瘍は良性でしょう。とてもよかった。しかし、あー、問題があります。
	Billy, mass density indicates benign. Which is very good. But, uh, there is a problem.
ピーターズ	左側頭後頭葉に位置していて、言語野にとても近いんです。
	It's in the left posterior temporal lobe, uh, very near the speech area of the brain.
ビリー	ということは？
	Wh-which means?
ピーターズ	手術するのが非常にむずかしい場所です。
	It's a very, very difficult area to operate on.
専門医	手術はしたくないです。成長してなければ、小さくできるし。
	I prefer not to operate. If not grow, I will just try to shrink [it].
ピーターズ	ＭＲＩで成長の度合いをモニターしてみましょう。これから1か月ぐらい。
	We'd like to bring you in for MRIs over the next month and monitor it, see how fast it's growing.
ビリー	あ・・・はい。
	Oh ... okay.

	＜かめっより＞　while I have you: あなたがここに来ているついでに（＝せっかくだから）。このフレーズ、もう何度か登場していますね。決まった言い回しのようです。

ジョン	いちいち言い訳なんてしてくれなくていいから。早くこっから出してくれ！
	I don't want to hear about all the problems. Just get me out, damn it!
リチャード	確認してんだよ、ケーブルの緩みかなにかを。スコンなんてなったら、おまえ、真っ二つだから。念には念を入れて。今は皆さん、地下室だ。
	They have to make sure the cables are loosened or something. They don't want the thing surging up, John, i-it'll cut you in half. They've secured it up here, they're working the, in the basement now.
ジョン	早く出してくれよ。
	Just get me out.
リン	はあ、2時から打ち合わせなの。それまでに動くようになる？
	I have a meeting scheduled at two. Is that thing going to be working?
リチャード	リン、もっと思いやり示そうよ。
	Ling, could we show some compassion here?
ジョン	ちきしょう！　もういい加減にしろってんだ！

	Yes. Well, anyway, I know this isn't the best of timing, but I don't think it's working out for us. I think we should start seeing other people. ... John?

	Phew.
ネル	あ、鼻鳴らしてる。ジョン？

ジョン	僕と別れるって言ってるの？

ジョン	ちゃんと話し合おうって気はないわけ？

	Well, there's nothing to discuss, really. I've made up my mind. There's no reason for me to leave you dangling. Pardon the pun.
ジョン	あ、あ～、ぽけぽけ、ぽけ・・・
	Er, uh, pokip. pokip ...
ネル	ジョン、聞いて。今でもとっても好きよ。でも、いずれダメになるのは目に見えてる。続きはそこ出てからね。ありがと。
	John, sweetie, I still adore you. But it, it's just not right in the long run. We'll talk more when you get out. (Peep) Thanks.

シーン10　◆法廷。依頼人・プルーン夫人への証人尋問（ｂｙビリー）
プルーン夫人	自分を偽ったことは一度もありません。人柄は美容整形では変わらないんです。
	I never misrepresented who I am. Cosmetic work does not change the person.
ビリー	ご主人は、人柄同様に引かれていた外見が見かけだおしだったと主張されていますが？
	What about the argument that he fell in love with you physically as well as emotionally, and physically you were artificial?
プルーン夫人	実際よりきれいに、若く見せる努力はみんなやっています。私は美容液の代わりにレーザーピーリングを受け、上げ底ブラの代わりに手術をしただけです。私だって、彼の間抜けぶりにはだまされたってかんじ。でも、相手をあるがまま受け入れるのが結婚でしょう。期待外れで訴えるなんて。ハッキリ言って、あなたと愛し合った後は、こっちにも文句ありよ。だまくらかしもいいとこ。こんな！
	Everybody tries to make themselves look better or younger. So, I had a laser peel instead of using moisturizer. So, I had implants instead of wearing a Wonderbra. I mean, I could argue I never knew he was such an imbecile. But in marriage, you take people for what they are; you don't sue them for what they're not. And trust me, after making love to you, I had a claim myself. Talk about fraud! Teeny!

シーン11　◆引き続き、プルーン夫人への反対尋問（ｂｙ相手側代理人）
相手代理人	変えてらっしゃるのは外見だけじゃないはずだ。ハーブ・サプリメントを飲んでますよね？
	But it wasn't just physical, was it, Mrs. Prune? What about all the herbal mood enhancers?
プルーン夫人	それが何？
	What about them?
相手代理人	セント・ジョンズ・ワート？
	Saint John's wort?
プルーン夫人	ストレス緩和。
	Nerve pain.
相手代理人	マオウ？
	Mahuang?
プルーン夫人	脂肪燃焼。
	Burns fat.
相手代理人	朝鮮人参？
	Ginseng?
プルーン夫人	免疫力向上。
	Boosts immunity.
相手代理人	イチョウ葉エキス？

プルーン夫人	記憶力。
	Memory.

プルーン夫人	寝不足に弱いんです。
	I'm cranky without sleep.
相手代理人	外見は本来の姿ではないし、内面的にも薬でずいぶん変えていらっしゃる。本当のアンジェラ・プルーンはどこに？
	Physically, you're not what you held yourself out to be. Mentally, you're different without the chemicals. I mean, who is the real Angela Prune?
ビリー	異議あり！　困らせています！
	Objection! Badgering!
プルーン夫人	やっと立ち上がってくれたのね～大物君！
	It's about time you sprang into action, big boy!

シーン12　◆ケイジ＆フィッシュ事務所。エレベーターの前
リチャード	俺は決心したぞー。君をクビにする、絶対に！
	I'm of an absolute mind to fire you. I'll tell you that!
ネル	本気？
	Really?
リチャード	ああ、本気だ。
	Yes, really!
ネル	それって、法的にはとんでもないことなんじゃない？　シニアパートナーとつきあってたアソシエイトがシニアパートナーと別れるなり解雇。ゼロいくつ付くかな？
	Well, you'd be out of your absolute mind legally. Associate dates senior partner, associate breaks up with senior partner, associate gets fired. How many zeros go with that one?
リチャード	ネル！
	Nelle!
ネル	べつに悪意でああしたんじゃないわ。そりゃ待ったほうが良かったけど・・・。リモコン持ってんだ！　あのね、リンの言うことって当たるの。男が別のトラブルに気を取られてる時が一番の別れ時、絶好のチャンスってわけ。
	I don't mean to be cruel, Richard. And perhaps I should have waited, but ... He's got his clicker! Look, there's truth to what Ling said: The best time to break up with a man is when he's distracted by some other crisis. I saw an opportunity here.
リチャード	な、で、でも、あんだけの仲だったんだしさあ。
	What ... Still, y-you owe him better than this.

	That's great. Uh ... I've got some bad news. Uh ... Billy ... Billy, while in court today, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage ... and he died. It was, uh, likely connected to the tumor. It's one of those things, they say, you know, although, uh ... I wish there was something I could say.

	＜かめっより＞　神様のことを "Him" などと大文字にするのは一般的な表記法かどうか、かめっは本をよく読まないので知らないのです。教会に近い人は大文字にする傾向がつよいようですが、どうでしょう？

シーン21　◆教会。ビリーの葬式の日
牧師	1年ほど前に、通りで空にわめいてる男に出くわしました。「あんたは最低の神だ！　心から恨んでやる！　残忍なろくでなしめ！」　呼び止めると、男はこう言いました。「でもな、まだ存在は信じている。」　人生には、それだけで精一杯の日もあります。今日もおそらくそうでしょう。我々は今日、ビリー・トーマスの人生をたたえるために集まりました。この世でのビリーは我々の思い出の中に生き、彼自身は次の世界へ旅立って行き・・・。ビリーがここに立って知り合いのために弔辞をのべていたのは、それほど前のことではありません。涙と笑いを誘うスピーチ・・・。
