Your Honor, I read that Constitution. I read the Preamble, the Postamble, the Amendments. I read it all. Oh, and nothing in it, nothing says marriage has to be between a man and a woman.

リチャード | 性犯罪者も結婚できます。殺人者だって認められてる。なのに、なんと、なんと、同性愛者にはモラルという聖域が立ちはだかる。脅威を感じる気持ちはよく分かります。偏見を持つのは個人の自由だし、私自身も偏見のかたまりです。だから正直にいきましょう。これは、とても露骨な偏見です。政府による勝手な道徳感の押しつけってやつです。つまらない政治家が増えると、こういうことになる。連中にはビジョンなどなくて、ただただ大衆に迎合する。ところがこの国の一般大衆ときたら、文化のないバカたればかり。こんな国、ほかにあります？ 精巧なスコープ付きライフルかついで、森に入って、鹿吹っ飛ばしてスポーツとは！

Sex offenders can marry. Murderers, cannibals can take the vows. But whoa, whoa, two gay people -- there goes the sanctity. Look, Your Honor, I read the Book of Virtues, I get it, and I'll stand up and defend every person's right to be an indefensible bigot. I'm one, but let's at least be honest. This is bigotry, blatant. It's a government trying to impose its own sense of morality, and this is exactly what happens when you have politicians who start conforming their views to what the people think because -- let's face it -- that's for the people in this country, too many red-necked, inbred idiots. Where else do people take high-powered rifles with sophisticated scopes, walk into the woods, blow the head off a deer and go, "Sport"?

She's not looking to throw a javelin; she just wants to get married. Your Honor, I've dated Cindy McCauliff, and she is one of the finest women I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. It's the 21st century. We should be beyond judging people by the color of their skin, their X or Y chromosomes or their anotomical ... Why can't we just look at the person? Simply judge the person? Cindy McCauliff is a beautiful woman who wants to get married. The only appropriate thing for this court or any other court to do is congratulate the groom.

＜注＞ postamble: 後文（前文 "preamble" に対して）。でも、アメリカ合衆国の憲法には「後文」はないと思います（笑）。リチャード、やってくれますね！ ウェブで探したかぎりでは、南アフリカ共和国の憲法しか出てきませんでした。

＜注＞ The Book of Virtues: 道徳の本。「友情」「思いやり」「勇気」「忍耐」など10の徳目にそった訓話を聖書や民話、実話などから取材してまとめてある。子供の教育に役立てるための親のための手引書という体裁。レーガン政権の教育長官だったWilliam Bennettの編著で、1993年刊。フェミニズムや性革命の結果としての家族の崩壊や自動虐待、少年犯罪の増加に対抗する動きとして、レーガン政権下で「道徳回復運動」が起こりました。そういう運動やこの本は共和党的（保守的）な臭いが付ずいのするものですね！ リチャードの弁論の中では「（civil rights に対抗する）偏見・反動の立場も理解していますよ」という論拠として登場しています。（ただし、民主党も「家族の強化」を訴えている現在は、この運動じたいの実質的な党派臭は薄れてきているのでは？）。
